Larry Shelby
Larry J. Shelby, 66, 1121 Neil Ave., St. Marys, died at 8:45 p.m. June 3, 2009, at his residence.
He was born July 2, 1942, in Celina to Leland "Bill" and Marjorie Wright Shelby. His mother survives in St. Marys. On Aug. 6, 1960, he married Ronda Grimm, who survives.
Other survivors are four children, Steve (Martha) Shelby, Hamilton, Sue (Doug) Sandkuhl, Hilliard, Dr. Scott (Shari) Shelby, Cincinnati, and Dr. Sky (Tami) Shelby, Mason; three brothers, a twin, Jerry (Rita) Shelby, Salisbury, N.C., Lynn (Brenda) Shelby, Rosebury, Ore. and Bill (Barbara) Shelby, Sunbury; two sisters-in-law, Janet (Edward) Ross, Sidney, and Audrey (Larry) Borden, Celina; a brother-in-law, Jim (Doris) Grimm, Palm Bay, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.
He worked at the former Weston Paper Mill, St. Marys. Later he retired as a banker, who had served in managerial positions for several financial institutions, including the former Union Savings and Loan Company, Central Savings Corporation, Bank One and Diamond Savings and Loan, all in St. Marys.
He graduated from St. Marys Memorial High School in 1960. He was a member of St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, co-founder of the St. Marys Community Foundation, on St. Marys City Schools board of education and the Apollo JVS board of education, and Auglaize County Council on Aging board of directors. He served as a coach for the St. Marys Little League girl's softball, elementary youth basketball, St. Marys Swim Team and was co-founder of the St. Marys Colts midget league football team.
He was instrumental in the establishment of several bikeways, including the Ohio 703 bike path and the Ohio 364 connector. He organized, directed and raced in the St. Marys Bike Race, was a member of the National Rifle Association and was a shooting instructor for the St. Marys Rifle Club. He was the State of Ohio Prone Shooting Champion in three distinct decades. He designed and oversaw the construction of the handicapped accessible facilities at a Diamond Savings and Loan office and received the George H.W. Bush Point of Light Award and the Builder of Bridges Award from the City of St. Marys. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Western Ohio Fish and Game Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles, all in St. Marys.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wayne Street United Methodist Church, St. Marys, the Rev. Jim Nuhfer officiating. A private family burial will follow.
Calling is 2-7 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys.
