Cyril E. "Cy" Brockman, 84, 413 E. Boundry St., Fort Recovery, died at 1:52 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009, at The Gardens at St. Henry.

He was born July 13, 1924, in Chickasaw, to Henry and Anna Hasselman Brockman. On July 10, 1948, he married Betty Jean Bergman, who survives.

Other survivors are five sons, Cy Jr. (Linda), Mike and Jim (Pat), all of Fort Recovery, and Mitch and Joe (Pat), all of Portland, Ind.; two daughters, Vicky (Roger) Knapke, Coldwater, and Brenda (Mark) Eichenauer, Fort Recovery; a sister-in-law, Lillian, Fort Recovery; three aunts who helped raise him, Rosaline Fullenkamp and Luella Hasselman, both of St. Henry, and Romilda Barhorst, Versailles; 22 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are two stepmothers, Mary Wenning and Mattie Gabbard; and a brother, Vernon "Butch."

He was employed at the former May & Riffle Funeral Directors and Furniture Dealers, Fort Recovery. In 1963, he became owner-operator of Brockman Funeral Home and Brockman Furniture Dealers, Fort Recovery. In 1980, he renovated the former historic Opera House building in downtown Fort Recovery and established Brockman's Appliances.

He was a 1943 graduate of Fort Recovery High and a 1949 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He served in the Marines with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific during WWII.

He was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery, and its choir. He was a past grand knight and charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council, a past commander and charter member of American Legion, a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, past president of the chamber of commerce and member of the Retail Merchants organization, all of Fort Recovery. He served on the Fort Recovery Fire Department and was one of the 1974 founders of the Ambassadors Club, Fort Recovery. He served on the board of trustees of Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater, and was a member of the State & National Funeral Directors Association. He was inducted into the Fort Recovery Hall of Fame in 1980.

Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, the Rev. Charles Mullen officiating. Burial is at St. Marys Cemetery, Fort Recovery, with military graveside honors to be conducted by the American Legion.

Calling is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Brockman-Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery. A Knights of Columbus prayer service is 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
