Celina shuts out St. Marys, 5-0

Celina's Erin Brooks hits a strong return to St. Marys' Kelly Fritz during their Western Buckeye League dual match on Monday afternoon at the Memorial High School courts. Brooks was taken to three games in the second singles match, but still got by Fritz, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-0. Celina won all five matches for a 5-0 shutout.
ST. MARYS - Celina received a stiff challenge from St. Marys, but was able to get a 5-0 shutout in Western Buckeye League dual-match action on Monday at Memorial High School courts.
The NetDogs improve to 2-0 on the league season as the loss is the first for the Roughriders in league play.
The two most closely contested matches came in first and second singles. Celina's Kelly Casad took on St. Marys' Megan Dominik in first singles. Casad took the opening set 6-2 before Dominik took the equalizer 6-3. Casad came back to take the match with a 6-1 third set.
In second singles, St. Marys' Kelly Fritz opened their match with a 6-2 win over Erin Brooks, but Brooks came back to take set two 6-3 before shutting out Fritz in the rubber game 6-0.
Amber Jaeger had an easier time than her singles teammates, getting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lauren Miller in third singles to earn the clinching match win.
The Celina first doubles team of Jess Wills and Kinzie Gardner had a challenge from Amy Ellis and Lydia Krugh in their match, winning in straight 6-3 sets.
In second doubles, Sara Dorsten and Rachel Smith dominated the first set against Alyshia Freewalt and Mallorie Sullivan, 6-0, then held off a late charge to complete the varsity sweep 6-4.
"St. Marys gave us a battle," said Celina coach Jan Morrison. "They played hard. First and second singles each went three sets. In third singles, it was a long match, although the score wouldn't show it. They played well."
Winning junior varsity doubles matches on Monday for Celina were Abby Brown and Shelby Decker, Shereé Werling and Emilee Langenkamp, Abbie Brown and Alina Olding and Lauren Besand.
Celina heads to Sidney today to face Lehman in non-league action. Both teams are back in WBL action on Thursday. Celina hosts Van Wert at the High School Courts while St. Marys makes the trip to Defiance.
