Mercer County Commissioners have agreed to make improvements at the county dog pound, bowing to pressure from local animal rights activists.
Commissioners and dog warden Tom Powell have come up with a plan to add more kennel space at the pound, located on Powell's rural Fort Recovery farm. Commissioners last week agreed to spend $1,600 for new kennels while Powell has agreed to pay for a huge concrete slab to expand kennel space. [More]

MINSTER - The nationally ranked Minster girls' cross country team will be competing in Alabama next month with the blessing of the Minster Local Schools board of education.
Coach Jessie Magoto told board members Monday night the Oct. 6-8 trip to the Jesse Owens Cross Country Classic Invitational would be made at no cost to the school district. Athletes as well as coaches will cover their own expenses, including airfare, hotel room and meals. [More]

FORT RECOVERY - The Fremont Street reconstruction project was completed for about $11,000 under the original estimate, village council members learned at Monday's regular meeting.
The Mercer County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the apparent theft of rolled aluminum valued at $25,000 from a Celina-area business.
Lavern W. Gross, president of Alumetal Manufacturing, 4555 U.S. 127, reported 20 coils of aluminum missing from the plant at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Some local farmers with livestock have been taking off corn silage the last couple of weeks and the fall harvest for grain will be in full swing soon.
