A Celina couple involved in an accidental shooting Dec. 27 had
another brush with law enforcement officers before the first
day of the New Year ended.
Deputies from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office responded
to the Grand Manor Trailer Court home home of Joyce Sheffield
and Clyde E. Grassley at 5:13 p.m. Thursday.
Sheffield, 46, reported that 53-year-old Grassley had threatened
her with a gun. Both parties had been drinking and the weapon
was taken for safekeeping, according to sheriff’s office
                  reports.
Deputies returned to 3601 Ohio 703, Lot 61, two hours later
after Grassley alleged his girlfriend had threatened “to
cut his throat” with a knife.
Authorities also became aware of alleged drug activity while
at the mobile home and continue to investigate this aspect,
according to reports. They did not elaborate on specifics.
Sheffield was transported to the Mercer County Jail following
the 7:20 p.m. incident, charged with domestic violence and released
after posting bond. She had been scheduled to appear for arraignment
on Friday, but called to report she was unable to come due to
an earlier gunshot wound. The matter has been continued to 1
                  p.m. Jan. 7.
Deputies continue to investigate the accidental shooting that
occurred at 8 p.m. Dec. 27 at the couple’s home.
Grassley reportedly had been showing the woman how to use a
handgun for her personal safety and she also handled the .380-caliber
weapon at some point. It apparently fell to the floor causing
an accidental discharge. Alcohol was a factor in the incident,
                  according to sheriff’s office reports.
Sheffield, who sustained entrance and exit wounds to the lower
left calf, did not realize she had been hit, according to the
report. Grassley summoned an ambulance at 10:35 a.m. Monday
after she experienced problems walking. This was the first indication
authorities received of a shooting taking place at the mobile
                  home.
The woman was treated at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital,
St. Marys, before being transferred to St. Rita’s Medical
                  Center, Lima, for additional treatment.
The accidental shooting case has been referred to the Mercer
County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible charges.
