        | 07-02-03: Rockford to help rebuild Van Wert cinema |

Village officials want to do their part to help the owner of the Twin
Cinemas in Van Wert rebuild the theater destroyed by tornadoes last November.
Village council member Randy Gutierrez suggested that the swimming pool
be opened for a day specifically to benefit the charity effort. All gate receipts would be
        donated to the rebuilding effort.
Gutierrez said lifeguards and pool staff members already have agreed to
donate a day of their time to make the idea work. No date has been set for the charity
        event yet.
The theater became a common image of the devastation across Van Wert
following the deadly storms. Emergency officials and the theater manager herded
moviegoers, including many children, into a safe area just before the storms struck. The
theater and adjoining drive-in movie theater were completely destroyed.
Rockford council members voted unanimously to go forward with the
        charity project.
In other business Tuesday, council members:
            - Heard from Fire Chief Ralph Rhoades, who praised town officials and
the community for their efforts in assisting his department at a recent house fire.
            - Learned that annexation proceedings for land owned by Parkway Local
Schools are about to be initiated. The land is on the south edge of town where the school
district plans to build a new K-12 building. Village officials want the annexation
completed before construction begins so the town can collect income taxes from the work.
            - Agreed to seek price quotes on removing a tree at the end of Columbia
        Street.
            - Heard that there are two open seats on the town's Tax Incentive
        Review Committee.
            - Declined to renew a bank note that was used to finance the expansion
of Shane's Park. Before acting, council members want to meet with park board members. |
