| 06-28-03: Commissioners give grants to Coldwater,
Mendon, townships |

Mercer County Commissioners this week handed down final decisions on
how $122,000 in Community Development Block Grant money will be distributed.
Commissioners agreed to fund projects in the villages of Mendon and
Coldwater and in Center, Butler and Marion townships. County officials had to choose from
among more than $481,000 in funding requests throughout the county. Many projects were
passed over because they failed to meet the low- to moderate-income guidelines of the
grant program.
Local governments that will receive CDBG funding this year include:
- Mendon will get at least $35,000 as the first installment of a
promised $50,000 in assistance over two years. The town plans to combine the money with a
$300,000 distressed community grant Mendon already received. The village also will seek
additional funding through the Ohio Public Works Commission. The grant money will be used
to reconstruct the south half of Main Street. Mendon could get all of its money this year
if another project on the list falls through.
- Coldwater will get $20,000 to help fund a $25,950 project to improve
a portion of Sixth Street.
- Center Township will get $20,000 to help fund a $45,000 project to
replace a bridge on Bogart Road east of Rice Road. The bridge was built in 1908.
- Butler Township was tentatively approved to receive $15,000 to help
fund a $20,150 project to improve Tangeman Road in the area where the pavement was torn up
for the Philothea sewer project a couple of years ago. Officials still are trying to
determine if residents in the project area meet the program's income guidelines.
- Marion Township will get $23,000 to help fund a $68,355 project to
install handicapped accessible restrooms in the township park.
The remaining balance of $9,000 will be used for administration costs
and to maintain a fair housing program required by the grant.
Commissioners also talked about providing future help to the village of
Montezuma. That town is seeking a distressed community grant like the one Mendon was
recently approved for. Commissioners said they could possibly use a portion of next year's
CDBG allocation to offset some of the village's costs in preparing the grant application. |
