01-11-03: Candidates' spending nears record amounts

    The dust from November's campaign trail has settled and local Republican candidates secured two local offices and outspent Democrats in each race.
    Campaign treasurers recently submitted the final of four quarterly reports outlining cash, services and materials donated to candidates.
    In this recent report, candidate collecting and spending is broken-out from Oct. 16 to Dec. 6. The Daily Standard compiled the amounts from three previous campaign reports and combined the data into a year-end report.
    Republicans candidates topped spending in two of three races, but gathered more in-kind services across the board, with major assistance coming from the Ohio Republican Party.
    In the match for county commissioner Republican Jim Zehringer of Fort Recovery won the election and the spending race, accumulating $20,807 from the beginning of last year through the November election. Democrat Ray Cron amassed $12,191.
    Both candidates filed paperwork to terminate their accounts. All funds were spent except each man had approximately $500 remaining that was accounted as repayment for personal loans incurred. Cron borrowed $8,500 of his own money; Zehringer used $7,898.
    Zehringer has Cron beat for in-kind donations also, non-cash donations that are not added to total figures.
    Cron reported only a $350 catering donation from Julie Cole Fleck as an in-kind contribution while Zehringer's in-kind donations included $5,112 in of printing and postage work from the Ohio Republican Party and $196 in telephone campaign work from the (Betty) Montgomery Campaign Committee.
